EARLY CHILDHOOD PLAYGROUND
BJA were invited to take the 8 hour flight to Honolulu to undertake school master planning and the detailed landscape design of the playground was a first step in it’s implemention. Since the schools foundation in 1961 little had been done by way of improvements.
We undertook detailed observation of how the children used the spaces and equipment, including the needs of different ages. The design provides a new entry structure to provide a sense of arrival and transition, partially encloses the verandahs so they are not just thoroughfares, and articulates the type and location of play equipment.
It is a good example of how landscape and architecture can work together and place making improve the usage of limited facilities.
