The new kindergarten embraces the educational ethos of this Sydney school with emphasis on self directed learning within a stimulating environment. Enthusiastic involvement of the parent build committee guided the project. The building is active on three sides, oriented to the street frontage as well as playgrounds within the site. The entry is via a wide verandah that doubles as a craft area and a stage for performances. Internally a second play stage is provided by a change in level with a theatrically framed opening.
North facing skylights bring winter warmth deep into the play space and under-floor reticulated hot water coils heat the rooms through a bamboo floor. Automated roof fans draw breezes down across the rooms and rainwater collected in tanks is reused to set a positive example for children regarding water management.
