The new kindergarten embraces the alternative educational ethos of this
Sydney school with its’ emphasis on self directed learning within a stimulating environment. Enthusiastic involvement of the parent build committee guided the project. The building needed to be active on three sides so is oriented to the street frontage as well as playgrounds within. The wide verandah is used as an entry, craft area and also doubles up as a stage. Internally a second “stage” is provided by a change in level with a theatrically framed opening.
Northern skylights bring winter warmth deep into the play space. Under-floor reticulated hot water coils heat the rooms through a bamboo floor. Automated roof fans draw breezes across the rooms and rainwater tanks set a positive example to children regarding water management.
